It was wet and very tatty, but with the most wonderful family photos dating from around 1912. Quite a well to do family by the look of it, and a beautiful grand House.
I decided I had to try and trace the family and send the photos home.
Fortunately all the photos were labelled, including the house which was called 'Tremough'.
A quick Google showed the house was in Penryn, Cornwall and was now part of the Exeter University Campus. There was also a wedding invitation dated 1891 addressed to
'Col. and Mrs Faulkner-Brown', so I had something to go on.
I passed the information onto a family historian friend Rosie, who loving a new hunt, sprang into action. The 1911 census revealed the family to be Col. Louis Faulkner-Brown, age 63, his wife, Francis, 58 and daughter Ethel age 26.
The 1891 census showed they lived at Striling Villas, Alexandra Road, Farnborough, Hants, with daughter Katherine, 7 (born in Rinkee India) and Ethel 6 (born Rinkee India)
Louis was born in 1848, and married Francis Taylor of 36 Wellington Road, Dublin, in on 24th Nov 1881 in Dublin. Louis address at this time was Manice Hotel, Kingston. Francis father was Thomas Taylor.
Louis Father was William Brown Esq, born 1818, a mercer from Chester. His mother was Emma Faulkner, born 1820 in Hull. Emmas parents were Charles Faulkner 1798, a Carrier from Manchester and Ann 1804, born Sunderland.
They had five children. Louis 1848, Helena 1850, Francis 1851, Ernest 1854 and Harry 1857.
Louis obviously came from a well to do family, he was at Charterhouse from 1859 til 1864, closely followed by his brothers. He persued a successful army career with the Royal Engineers rising through the ranks from Major to Colonel.
The family moved to 'Tremough' in 1906 and remained there until 1924 when they relocated to Falmouth.
Both daughters married. Katherine, to James A Ford 1870, of Falmouth in 1911.
They had a daughter, Pamela Mary born 19th May 1917. She married Donald Geoffrey Mead born 9th Mar 1903, from Truro in 1945. They died within 3 months of each other in 1996.
The 1939 Register show James A Ford, of Private Means, living at Pengreep House,
Ponsanooth, Truro Cornwall.
Pamela Mead, 19 is also there, unpaid domestic duties!
Ethel married Aylmer Francis Quin, born 18.4.1882, in Falmouth in 1923. He died in 1949.
They had a son, Cormac B, born Falmouth in 1926. He married Vera A Kumovic in Chelsea
in 1951. Cormac died in 1992.
The 1939 register shows Aylmer at 52 Weathercock Lane, Newport Pagnall, Bucks.
So there you have it. I must give all credit to Rosie for all this amazing information, also from my enquiries to Exeter University and the Carthusian List for information about Charterhouse School, where I found the information about Louis brothers. If any family eventually see this and discover any errors please do correct me.
I have now shared this story on Facebook in the hope that I can trace relatives of Pamela and Donald Mead from Truro.
